Mark Matan

Mark Matan

Principal

As Managing Partner, Mark is responsible for all aspects of Matan Companies' operations and real estate holdings. He provides leadership, guidance, and vision to Matan’s seasoned executive management team. Mark began his career in real estate alongside his father at Fitzgerald & Matan, primarily working in commercial leasing and land sales. During the mid-1990’s Mark started acquiring commercial real estate on behalf of a small group of prominent investors, following the RTC crisis. With Mark as it’s leader and major investor, Matan grew exponentially. Mark still remains a significant investor in the company, sitting alongside that core group of original investors.

A native of Kensington, MD, Mark attended Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C., later completing his undergraduate work at Georgetown University.  Mark is a licensed real estate broker in the state of Maryland, as well as an active member in the community. As a strong supporter of catholic education, Mark has served as the President of the Board of Directors for the Visitation Academy and recently completed three terms on the Board of Directors for Gonzaga College High School.

Scott Cowperthwaite

Principal

As Principal, Scott oversees all of Matan’s financial operations and investor relations, including all accounting, tax, budgeting, audit, cash management, investor reporting and implementation of financial and risk management strategies. He plays a major role in facilitating growth by taking a lead role in corporate financial planning and reporting. Prior to joining Matan more than 20 years ago, Scott served as a manager for a regional public accounting firm, providing audit and tax compliance functions for his clients in the real estate, construction and financial services industries.

Scott holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Mount St. Mary’s University, later becoming a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Maryland. Scott, an active alumni, serves on The Board of Visitors for the Bolte School of Business at Mount St. Mary's University. An active leader in the community, Scott has also served on the Board of Directors for the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce and YMCA of Frederick County. He currently serves on the Finance Committee at the YMCA of Frederick County.

JP Matan

JP oversees the day-to-day leasing activities for the Matan Companies’ current portfolio, including all office, lab, and industrial properties throughout the Washington DC metro area. With over 25 years of experience in the real estate industry, JP applies his knowledge, expertise, and client relationship skills to the continued growth and success of Matan Companies.

JP holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Fordham University. As a native of Washington DC and graduate of Gonzaga College High School, JP continues to give back to his local community and utilize his knowledge of the DC-metro region to enhance the presence of Matan.

Karl Morris

Senior Managing Director, Development

As Senior Managing Director of Development, Karl applies his 28+ years of experience in construction and commercial real estate to the continued growth of Matan Companies. In his role, Karl manages all aspects of the development process including, but not limited to, entitlements, design team management, general contractor selection, construction and budget management. Karl's long history of managing design teams is reflected the over 4 million square feet of tilt-up concrete office, manufacturing and distribution facility construction he has overseen.

Aside from his directorship at Matan, Karl is also a member of the NAIOP and CoreNet Global. His contributions within the walls of Matan, are matched only by his consistent dedication to service outside the walls of Matan. As a Board Member and President of the Fredericktowne Rotary Club and mentor at the Frederick Rescue Mission, Karl utilizes his leadership skills to improve the quality of life in the surrounding community.

Meredith Roark

Senior Managing Director, Operations

As Senior Managing Director of Operations Meredith Roark applies her 20+ years of experience in the commercial real estate industry to enhancing the operational efficiency of the Matan organization. Her forward-thinking vision on how to consistently optimize the policies, programs, and processes at our Frederick headquarters continues to propel our growth strategy. Prior to holding this position at Matan, Meredith worked as JLL’s Regional Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region, where she was directly responsible for client relationship management, strategy, and execution of their Property Management business.

Meredith received her Bachelor of Science degree from Frostburg State University.  Among her many achievements, Meredith holds numerous designations, including Real Property Administrator (RPA), Certified Property Manager (CPM), LEED ® Green Associate, Certified Commercial Investment Manager (CCIM) and served as a Golden Triangle Board Member from 2012 - 2015. She now serves as a member of Apartment and Office Building Association (AOBA), Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), and U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Jamie Minkler

As Managing Director of Acquisitions, Jamie sets acquisitions strategy for the company, as well as sourcing and evaluating all potential acquisitions.  From site selection to contract negotiations, through due diligence and entitlement, he manages the financial and administrative aspects of the acquisition process. With over a decade of experience, he leverages his knowledge of capital markets, financial analysis, and investor expectation to ensure that Matan continues to deliver exceptional risk-adjusted returns for both Matan’s high-net-worth and institutional investors.

Jamie joined Matan in 2015, initially serving as an Associate, building out Matan’s Asset Management and Development report process, designing and constructing models to ensure managers had accurate and dynamic tools to manage investments at both the asset and fund-reporting level.

Prior to Matan, Jamie worked as a Financial Analyst at both B.F. Saul Company and Northmarq Capital. Jamie earned his master’s degree in Professional Studies in Real Estate from Georgetown University with a concentration in Finance and his undergraduate degree from Randolph-Macon College in History.  He is active in several organizations including DC Real Estate Group, the Urban Land Institute, and Georgetown University alumni groups.

Patrick Sherman

As Managing Director of Accounting, Patrick brings over 10 years of experience in finance and accounting to assist Matan in maintaining solid financial fitness. Prior to accepting this position, Patrick served as Manager of Assurance Services for RSM US, a global audit, tax, and consulting firm for middle market businesses.

Patrick received both a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Maryland, College Park. He is a Certified Public Accountant and serves as a member of The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Brad Benna

Brad focuses on all activities associated with the marketing, brokerage, and negotiation of both new and existing leases along the northern I-270 corridor. Brad spends much of his time in Frederick and Northern Virginia, seeking to expand the footprint of the Matan organization and overseeing acquisitions in these areas. Prior to taking this role at Matan, Brad, a commercial real estate broker, served as Vice President of Sales and Leasing for McShea and Company. Though, he credits most of his real estate ingenuity to the years he spent working alongside his father in his family-owned construction businesses.

Brad holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Georgetown University. Among his many achievements, Brad was named Broker of the Year in Frederick County in 2016 and 2017. Brad has been active over the years as a leader in in regional economic development through terms on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce of Frederick County, the Business and Industry Committee of Frederick Memorial Hospital, and the Business and Industry Committee for the Frederick Office of Economic Development. Brad has also worked with the Affordable Housing Council of Frederick County, the Downtown Frederick Partnership and was a 2005 Leadership of Frederick graduate. Brad continues to give back to his community through volunteer work and serving as both a baseball and basketball coach for the county youth.

Dan Milligan

As Director of Finance, Dan is responsible for the debt portfolio for the company. For each individual project, he leverages his banking and institutional capital relationships to bring about the best loan executions for the assets, stakeholders and the company.  Dan joined Matan in 2002 and has been involved in acquisition, refinance and construction debt financing transactions totaling more than $2 billion.

Prior to Matan, Dan worked at Legg Mason as a Vice President in its mortgage and real estate investment banking group.  Dan earned his master’s degree in Financial Management from the University of Maryland and his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in Finance and Economics.

Brian Morris

Director, Entitlement

Brian Morris joined the Matan Companies in February of 2014 to help facilitate all facets of the development process, with a special emphasis on land entitlement. He now manages all land entitlement projects and has entitled over nine million square feet. Brian holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Coastal Carolina University.

As Director of Construction, Pete is responsible for overseeing and managing the construction risk for the company.  Pete has over 23 years of commercial construction experience. Since joining Matan in 2005, Pete has managed more than four million square feet of ground-up construction, as well as numerous tenant improvement projects.

Prior to working at Matan, Pete was with Morgan-Keller as Preconstruction Manager in their general contracts group. Pete earned his undergraduate degree from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Business. Outside of work Pete is involved in his son’s activities – primarily serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster in his sons’ Scout Troop.  Pete has also been involved in Church Leadership at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Utica, serving in various roles on Church Council in past years.

Vince Burke

Managing Director, Development

Vince serves in both development and investment and portfolio strategy roles for the Matan Companies. Prior to joining Matan, Vince spent 20 years at the B. F. Saul Company, performing a breadth of real estate disciplines, including transactions, development, asset management, and finance roles. He led transactions for the Saul Organization for over a decade, conducting the purchase and sale of properties of all product types, in multiple markets, throughout the east coast and mid-west of the United States.  He has developed multiple institutional scale retail and residential mixed-use buildings, and the master planning of millions of square feet throughout the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area. 

Vince is a native Washingtonian, alumnus of Loyola University Maryland and the Georgetown Preparatory School.  He is an active member of the community with associations to many industry and non-profit organizations.  He has been a member of the Urban Land Institute, NAIOP, Seven Corners Land Use Task Force, Bethesda Master Plan Steering Committee, Bethesda Implementation Advisory Committee, EMPOWER Montgomery Governing Committee, Takoma-Langley Crossroads Owners Advisory Group, and the White Flint Implementation Advisory Committee. 

Vince has served in advisory and fundraising capacity to local non-profits including the Washington Jesuit Academy, the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, and is currently a Board Member at the Don Bosco Cristo Rey School. 

Leigh Jonker

Director, Property Management

As Director of Property Management, Leigh brings 20+ years of experience in the commercial real estate industry to her current role. In this position, she is responsible for overseeing the management of Matan's various assets, while working collaboratively with other departments to create effective strategies that can help increase the value of the properties for both the tenants and the company. Before joining the Matan Companies, Leigh served as a Director of Asset Management at Federal Realty, responsible for managing a mixed-use portfolio in suburban Washington, D.C. During her tenure, Leigh developed and implemented best practices that focused on building relationships and fostering collaboration between various departments, including training and overseeing employees, managing regional vendor and third-party contracts, overseeing the construction of capital improvements, and working alongside the development team on new construction projects.

Leigh holds the designation of Real Property Administrator (RPA) from the Building Owners and Management Institute (BOMI) and is a Certified Retail Real Estate Professional (CRRP) through the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). In her free time, Leigh volunteers with the Walkersville High School Softball Team and Marching Band Boosters and works with hospice and palliative care patients to assist with end-of-life planning and legacy projects.

 

Zach Jung

As Managing Director, Zach’s focus is on developing and implementing asset and portfolio level strategies across Matan Companies’ investment portfolio. Zach is responsible for the financial management of each asset through performance metrics for exceeding the investor returns.

Prior to joining Matan, Zach spent six years at Tishman Speyer, most recently overseeing acquisitions, dispositions, and asset management efforts in Washington, D.C. and North Carolina. Zach holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. He is a member of the DC Real Estate Group and an alumni volunteer for the Darden School of Business.  

During his tenure at Tishman Speyer, Zach was involved in a wide range of projects including asset management of a 5M+ SF office and residential portfolio, the development and stabilization of a new trophy office development, the reimagining of a prominent downtown office building, the acquisition of an urban mall to be repurposed as a new mixed-use development, as well as leading the firm’s entry into the North Carolina market. Prior to joining Tishman Speyer, Zach led capital transactions for Pembroke Companies, a multifamily operator in NYC and worked in the Structured Finance Advisory practice at EY.
